Ngāi Tahu Farming is committed to best-practice farming and the continuous improvement of environmental, social, cultural and economic outcomes associated with its operations.
Our business currently consists of farm design, consenting, development, project management, cultivation and small works contracting. We are concentrating on the development of Te Whenua Hou and Balmoral Forest into irrigated farm land including dairy, sheep and beef.
On the surface our farms appear to be like many other dairy farms, however the difference is the level of input from cultural and technical experts, as well as the use of leading technology.
We have worked together with the Manawhenua Working Party and the Office of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu to define our farming values. Through this process we have defined the cultural, social, environmental and economic needs for our developments and farming operations.
We have also put together an advisory team, which includes members from Lincoln University, South Island Dairy Development Centre and key professionals who consult on animal and pasture performance. This group helps Ngāi Tahu Farming maintain best-practice dairy farming.
We use leading technology on our farms to minimize our effect on the environment and help maximise farm production. This includes variable rate irrigation, soil moisture indicators, weather forecasting, GPS fertiliser application, in shed-feeding and stock management systems.
